The CPR workers were organized into groups and traveled to railroad camps by foot to work.
Chinese workers were given the backbreaking and hazardous jobs of tunneling and handling of explosives. On this particular section of the CPR, workers had to cut into 55 feet of stone
The (Hell Gate) Fraser Canyon.
The conditions in which the Chinese had to live and work were so bad that many died of scurvy and other diseases
It is estimated that 600 Chinese workers died while constructing the CPR.
After the completion of the CPR, the Chinese railway workers were basically left unemployed at the worksite.
